Yuppiedom, Wapping, and the Indy gamble

Terry Kirby explains that the time was ripe for The Independent in booming Thatcher-era London at the height of ‘yuppiedom’. A crop of talented journalists and staff joined the paper rather than cross picket lines at Wapping, where Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation papers had opened a new print works and set off a prolonged confrontation with the print unions.
