Amke Lehr realized the full implications of the terrorist attacks on 11 September, 2001, when she cancelled her plans to travel to the U.S.A.–a trip she had been looking forward to–when she realized how much new security had been instituted. At the time she resented being treated “like a criminal,” but looking back she understood why it had to be that way.
