Julian Nundy remembers covering the highly eventful last Soviet Party Congress in Moscow for the Independent in the summer of 1990, and remarking how much the country had changed since he worked there for Reuters in the 1970s. Afterwards he travelled to Ukraine, where the recently elected Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic voted for independence.
