San Francisco’s black population first left San Francisco in 1858

 
Reverend Dr. Amos Brown points out that a large number of San Francisco’s black residents first left San Francisco to settle in Canada due to hostility from white residents, citing the racist policies of California’s first governor, Peter Burnett.
