Havilande Whitcomb was a tourist in Berlin the weekend its famous Wall fell in November 1989. She describes how armed guards at the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie were still posted there as the Wall came down, but they were unsure how to react to the floods of people crossing the border between East and West Berlin.
