Faking a school uniform you couldn’t afford in the 1940s

 
When Iris passed the scholarship exam (now known as the 11+) in England the late 1940s, it meant that she could go to a more academic high school in her area. The school uniform was very specific and very costly, however, so When her mother couldn’t afford the school uniform she improvised – to the displeasure of the headmistress!
